Roots

The root of a word is its basic meaning before a prefix or a suffix is added to it. If you know what a word root means, you can often figure out the meaning of other words with the same root.

Here are some examples of words that share roots.

Root Word Related Word
Connect means to join together. Disconnect means the opposite of joining together. It means breaking apart.
Fear means to be afraid. Fearless means not to be afraid.
View means to look at. Review means to look at again.
Hope means to wish for good things. Hopeful means full of wishes for good things.
