Investigate Ads

Step 1. Questions

Open a magazine, turn on the television or radio, or surf the Internet. You are certain to find advertisements. Ads help pay for the entertainment and information that you receive. Their purpose, however, is neither to entertain nor inform. Their purpose is to sell products and services.

For this e-Journal project, you will research and report on advertising and its influence on consumers. Here are some questions to guide your research.
  • What methods do advertisers use to sell their products?
  • How can ads create a positive image for a product, even if the product is unhealthy?
  • What steps can people take to resist the influence of ads? How are teens working together to resist ads?
  • How are you influenced by advertising?
Visit the Web sites listed in Step 2 and take notes about what you learn. You may choose to study specific ads that you see online, in magazines, or in other media. Or with your teacher's permission, design and conduct a survey or simple experiment. See for yourself how advertising affects you and your classmates.

When you are ready, follow Steps 3 and 4 to write your report.

Step 2. Research

Research answers for the questions you were asked in Step 1. Visit these Web sites. Take notes about them on this page, too!
