Step 1. Questions
How can teens avoid sexually transmitted diseases (STDs)? The only certain way is abstinence, which is avoiding sexual activity. Remember that abstinence is the expected standard for teens. Protecting yourself from STDs is a good reason to meet this standard.
All STDs are damaging to health, but some are especially serious. Infection with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), which is spread from person to person in many of the same ways that STDs are, can be fatal if it develops into acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). AIDS already has killed millions of people around the world. Other diseases, including syphilis and gonorrhea, are growing increasingly resistant to antibiotics that once stopped them.
For this e-Journal project, you will investigate and report on sexually transmitted diseases. You may report on AIDS or another STD, or report on several different STDs.
As you research this topic, look for answers to these questions about the STD you selected.- What are the symptoms of the disease? How does the disease progress? What are some possible outcomes?
- Can the disease be treated or cured? If so, how?
- What organism causes the disease? Is it a virus? A strain of bacteria?
- How does the disease affect people’s lives? What stories do they tell?
- What is the best way to protect yourself from STDs?
As you visit the Web sites listed in Step 2, take notes in the note-taking boxes. You may also use search engines to find other Web sites, or research STDs at the library. You may also choose to interview a physician, nurse, or other health-care professional.
When you are ready, follow Steps 3 and 4 to write your report.
