Step 1. Questions

Marcy E. is 17 years old. She is thinking of leaving high school to marry her boyfriend. The two want to move to a large city to enjoy the night life and parties. Neither is sure what they'll do for a living, but Marcy thinks it will be easy to get a good job.

What advice would you give Marcy? Do you think that she should be getting married at age 17? What reasons would you offer for staying in school and saving marriage for later?

For this e-Journal project, you will write a letter of advice to Marcy E. You may write the letter as if she was a close friend, a relative, or a stranger.

Here are some questions to answer in the letter.
  • What kind of jobs are available to teens who have dropped out of school? What jobs are available to those who complete high school or college?
  • What are the benefits to social health of staying in school?
  • Besides classes and homework, what else does school offer?
  • What would you predict would happen to Marcy and her boyfriend if they got married?
To help answer these questions, visit the Web sites listed in Step 2. Take notes in the note-taking boxes. Include relevant data and statistics. You may also discuss staying in school and teen marriage with a health teacher, school nurse, or guidance counselor.

When you are ready, follow Steps 3 and 4 to write your report.

Step 2. Research
