Resolving Conflicts

Step 1. Questions

Teens may have conflicts with peers at school, with neighbors, and even with friends. Some conflicts involve bullies. Bullies treat others disrespectfully, often through name-calling, threats, or physical force.

How should teens resolve conflicts? Violence is never the answer. The best ways to resolve conflicts involve discussion, mediation, and compromise. For a serious conflict, teens should consult a parent, guardian, teacher, or other trusted adult.

For this e-Journal project, you will research and report on ways to resolve conflicts. Here are questions to guide your research and writing.
  • When should teens involve a trusted adult in resolving a conflict?
  • What is mediation? How does mediation help to resolve conflicts?
  • What steps can teens follow to resolve conflicts?
  • What are some healthful ways for teens to handle bullying?
  • Why is conflict resolution an important skill for teens to learn?
First, visit the Web sites listed in Step 2 and take notes in the note-taking boxes. You may also discuss this topic with a school counselor or another adult skilled in resolving conflicts. Follow Steps 3 and 4 to write your report.
